The Sound of the Shell

1. The most important events in this chapter are when Ralph blows into the conch shell, when the boys are figuring out who should be the leader of the group, and then when Jack is about to kill the pig. The blowing of the conch shell is important because it brings all of the boys together into one group and it draws their attention to Ralph since he was the one that blew it. The vote on who should be leader is also an important event because it draws the line between Jack (who wanted to be leader) and Ralph (who was voted leader). When Jack didn't kill the pig, he vows to never let one go again or show mercy. This shows a little more about Jack's personality.

2. Questions:-Do Jack and Piggy know each other?-What happened to the pilot?-Why does everybody hate Piggy?
3. The Sound of The Shell
The title of the chapter represents the blowing of the shell which brings all of the boys together. The shell represents leadership because Ralph has possession of the conch shell and he has the power to bring them together.
4.

  1. Ralph feels sorry for Piggy, but he doesn't want Piggy to bring down his popularity with the group. This causes him to sort of shun Piggy by not including him when he, Jack, and Simon go off to explore the island.
  2. Ralph blowing the conch shell and bringing the whole group together are factors that contribute to getting elected as leader. He was already put into a position of authority.
  3. There is a hierarchy and position in the community that now exists in LOTF. There is a chief, Ralph, and also the leader of the hunters, Jack.
  4. We all think that Ralph will be a successful leader, because he seems confident in himself and seems to include everyone except Piggy. We think one problem he might have is keeping trust with the rest of the group because he already broke Piggy's trust.
  5. The conch is a symbol of power and leadership, bringing the boys together.
